My first experience photographing yachts for Worth Avenue Yachts - Checklist
Pre-Event Planning: Before the event, coordinate with Nina Chiaravalli or the yacht advisor at the Worth Avenue Yachts team. Discuss their specific requirements, the yachts to be photographed, and any branding or style guidelines. Clear communication is essential to align your vision with their expectations.
Scouting the Location: Conduct a thorough site visit to familiarize yourself with the event location and the placement of the yachts. This will help you plan your shots effectively and consider lighting conditions.
Equipment Preparation: Ensure you have the necessary equipment and gear, including high-quality cameras, a variety of lenses (wide-angle and telephoto), a tripod, and any lighting equipment you may need. Have backup equipment in case of technical issues.
Staging and Styling: Work closely with Nina and her team to stage the yachts in the most appealing way. Pay attention to details such as interior and exterior decor, cleanliness, and the placement of promotional materials.
Highlight Unique Features: Collaborate with Worth Avenue Yachts to identify and emphasize the unique selling points of each yacht. Showcase luxurious features, innovative design elements, and advanced technology.
Lighting and Timing: Be mindful of lighting conditions. Early morning and late afternoon often provide the best natural light for photography. Use reflectors or diffusers to control harsh light. More often the staterooms will require additional lighting. Be cautious of light taken from a flash can cause bright spots on surfaces. Position the camera to reduce the unwanted glare in the image.
Aerial Photography: If possible, consider using a drone to capture stunning aerial shots of the yachts on Lake Union. Aerial photos can provide a unique and captivating perspective.
Post-Processing: After the event, meticulously edit and retouch your photos to ensure they meet the highest standards. Focus on color correction, exposure, distortion, and the removal of any distractions.
Feedback and Follow-Up: Request feedback from Nina Chiaravalli and the Worth Avenue Yachts team to understand what worked well and how you can improve for future collaborations. Building a strong working relationship can lead to more opportunities in the future.
Photographing yachts at such an event is not only a prestigious assignment but also learning to view and appreciate each of the builders’ styles. My goal was to showcase the yachts' features but also convey the luxurious and aspirational lifestyle that potential clients can experience.
